U.S. Department of State’s National Security Language Initiative Chinese Scholarship Summer Program for High School Students (NSLI-Y)
NSLI-Y Program activity description (organized by the Master of Chinese Language and Literature program):
The U.S. Department of State has launched the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) since 2006, aiming to improve young American students’ learning and cultural understanding of internationally important languages. The program is planned and executed by the American Councils for International Education and provides overseas language learning opportunities to American high school students aged 15 to 18. Our school has been hosting this program - the "U.S. Department of State National Security Language Initiative Chinese Scholarship for High School Students - Summer Program" since 2022. Due to its good results, our school has been specially designated to continue the program year after year.
This project is led by the NSLI-Y project team of the Chinese Language Master's Degree Program of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and will implement a 6-week Chinese course (from late June to early August). A total of 22 to 30 American high school students participated in the program. The activities include 120 hours of intensive Chinese language courses, 12 hours of cultural courses, language partner exchanges, cultural tourism, homestay arrangements, and high school exchanges. This project will provide international students with a rich language and cultural learning experience, and through interactions with local Taiwanese, enable them to have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and Taiwanese society, improve their Chinese language skills, and strengthen their International relations between Taiwan and the United States.
This program welcomes those who are interested in matters related to Chinese language and Chinese language teaching from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of our school to join the ranks of internships. Students of our school who participate in this program will gain rich language, culture, teaching and learning experience, and gain expertise in many aspects.
